A primeira corrida de 500 milhas em Indianápolis, em 1911, foi ganha por Ray Harroun, e que logo seria conhecida como a Indy 500, rapidamente se estabelecendo como a principal corrida de automóveis da América do Norte, consagrando como lendas do esporte, pilotos como Wilbur Shaw, Vukovich Bill, A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Rick Mears e os Unsers, nomes referenciados para sempre no cenário esportivo dos Estados Unidos.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A Indy tem seus primeiros registros datados de 1909, dois anos antes da primeira disputa em Indianápolis. As datas são imprecisas e há quem diga que as primeiras corridas foram disputadas em 1902. Entre 1909 e 1916 poucas provas eram disputadas e a própria AAA (American Automobile Association) só foi considerar o norte-americano Harry Harkness como o primeiro campeão nacional, no ano de 1902, somente em 1951. Foi entre 1915 e 1916 que muitas pistas surgiram, o que pôde proporcionar a organização de um campeonato nacional.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Muitos historiadores defendem que a Indy só começou a ser realmente disputada a partir de 1956, ano em que a organização das provas passou para as mãos da Usac. A Cart começou a surgir no final de 1978, quando os chefes de equipe perceberam que sua importância dentro da Usac era muito pequena e decidiram fundar uma nova entidade. O dono da equipe Patrick, Pat Patrick, foi o primeiro presidente da Cart.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A Cart era uma associação pioneira e considerada a responsável pelo sucesso da Fórmula Indy nas décadas de 1980 e 1990.  A entidade era diferente de outros grupos que organizam campeonatos, como a FIA, por exemplo, que comanda a Fórmula 1. Na Cart, os dirigentes eram os próprios donos de equipes, que também elegiam o presidente da categoria. Os cartolas tentavam descentralizar ao máximo o poder. Cada corrida, por exemplo, tinha o seu promotor, que cuidava de toda a logística do evento. Esse promotor também era encarregado de vender ingressos e conseguir os patrocinadores da prova. Os lucros eram divididos entre o organizador do evento e as equipes, que também ganhavam com publicidade nos carros.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Émerson Fittipaldi foi o primeiro brasileiro a disputar a categoria, em 1984. Cinco anos depois, Fittipaldi conquistaria o título, ano em que também venceu as 500 milhas de Indianápolis pela primeira vez. Até o ano passado, Émerson era o piloto brasileiro que mais vencera na Indy: 22 vezes, marca superada por Hélio Castro Neves. Ele, assim como Gil de Ferran e Castro Neves, é um dos poucos estrangeiros que conseguiu vencer a prova mais famosa do calendário norte-americano: as 500 milhas de Indianápolis. Fittipaldi ganhou em 1989 e 1993, Ferran em 2003 e Castro Neves em 2001, 2002 e 2009.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A Fórmula Indy deixou de ser uma categoria exclusiva dos norte-americanos. Além das provas nos Estados Unidos e Canadá, foram disputadas também corridas no Brasil (Jacarepaguá), Japão (Motegi) e Austrália (Surfer's Paradise). Na temporada 2001, a Indy finalmente retornou à Europa, após uma corrida em Silverstone, Inglaterra, no ano de 1978, com provas na Alemanha e Inglaterra, e chegou também ao México.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A Indy experimento diversas fases nesse mais de um século, da glória suprema à quase extinção, quase sempre motivadas por brigas políticas entre as equipes e as diferentes organizações que sancionaram o campeonato durante esse período, incluindo a American Automobile Association (AAA), o United States Auto Club (Usac) e o Championship Auto Racing Teams (Cart). A IRL foi fundada pelo presidente do Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Tony George, segundo ele, "para preservar as tradições e a emoção das corridas de monoposto."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Depois de mais de uma década em que o esporte esteve dividido entre a Cart (e sua sucessora Champ Car) e a IRL, as duas partes entraram em acordo para reunificar a Indy em 2008, sob o controle da IRL. Hoje, ela é a única entidade a comandar os principais campeonatos de monopostos da América do Norte: a Fórmula Indy e as Fórmulas 2000, Mazda e Indy Lights, categorias de formação de pilotos. Desde 1940 só máquinas norte-americanas venciam. Nunca se havia alcançado a média de 242 km/h. Motor atrás não tinha vez. Mas um escocês que já foi pastor de ovelhas - piloto, muito piloto - foi a Indiana destruir todos os tabus de sua prova mais famosa. E voltou com os 155 mil dólares do primeiro lugar. Nas 500 milhas de Indianápolis de 1965 o grande Jim Clark fez a corrida que o tornará inesquecível.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jim Clark foi brutal em Indianápolis. Quando 33 carros potentíssimos dispararam na pista evidenciou-se que um ia com mais gana, o escocês Jim Clark, para muitos o melhor corredor do mundo, um corredor que sempre anda na frente, quer sempre ganhar e só mão vence sempre porque muitas vezes os carros não resistem à sua fúria. As 500 Milhas de Indianápolis deste ano ficaram para este terrível tocador que liderou em 190 de suas 200 voltas, solitário, incontestável. Desta vez o líder não foi acossado pelos adversários, pelo contrário, correu tanto que na ânsia de acompanhá-lo os outros estraçalhavam os carros. Uma vitória completa, dessas que tornam um corredor inesquecível.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;O ritmo da corrida foi tão violento que seu recorde - 236,5 km/h obtido pelo texano A.J. Foyt em 1964, ao vencê-la foi batido por três carros. O Lotus Ford de Jim Clark (242,500 km/h), o Lotus Ford de Parnelli Jones (240,110 km/h) e o Ford adaptado do italiano Mario Andretti (239,980 km/h). Foyt liderou a prova durante dez voltas. Depois foi superado por Clark e o perseguiu com todas as forças, mas impotente, até a 115ª volta, quando foi obrigado a parar porque forçara muito seu carro, outro Lotus/Ford de motor traseiro.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Desde 1916 um piloto estrangeiro não vencia em Indianápolis (o úlitmo era o italiano Dario Resta) e desde 1940 nenhuma máquina estrangeira chegara na frente. Outra supremacia quebrada foi a dos motores Offenhauser, de 4 cilindros, motores dianteiros, que desde 1947 venciam em Indianápolis. É também a 1ª vez que os motores traseiros vencem essa prova.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Clark e Foyt se bateram pela melhor volta. Inicialmente Clark quebrou a marca de Foyt de 1964, que era recorde, depois Foyt superou esse tempo por duas vezes e, nas últimas cem voltas, Clark marcou sucessivos tempos sempre melhores. Quando Foyt foi obrigado a desistir, Parnelli Jones ficou em segundo, também com Lotus Ford, mas suas tentativas de alcançar Clark foram inúteis, pois o escocês ruivo andava cada vez mais e do motor do carro de Jones vazava óleo. O estreante Andretti, andou em velocidade surpreendente com seu Ford adaptado.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Chegaram ao fim só onze carros, um dos menores números de todos os tempos, mas a corrida não registrou nenhum desastre mortal, acontecimento raro, e o único acidentado foi o carro número 5 de Bud Tingestald, cuja roda saiu voando e o carro bateu na muralha de proteção. Bud não se machucou. Jim Clark pela vitória ganhou um beijo de Miss Indiana e 155 mil dólares. Parnelli Jones, o segundo, recebeu 60 mil dólares; Mario Andretti, o terceuri, ganhou 37.500 dólares. Al Miller, quarto com Lotus Ford, ganhou 22 mil dólares. Gordon Johncock, com um Roadster, foi o quinto colocado, ganhou 18 mil dólares. O sexto foi Mickey Rupp, com Offenhauser, que ganhou 16 mil dólares. O sétimo foi Don Branson, com Ford, 14.500 dólares. O oitavo foi Bobby Johns, Lotus Ford, 13.250 dólares. O nono, Al Unser, Lola Ford, 12.250 dólares. O décimo, Eddie Johnson, Roadster, 11 mil dólares; e o décimo primeiro, Len Sutton, Ford, 10 mil dólares.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Oito carros com motor Ford, dois Roadsters e um Offenhauser conseguiram chegar ao fim da corrida. Os primeiros seis carros tinham pneus Firestones. O sétimo e o nono colocados usavam pneus Goodyear. Todo mundo usou pneus mais leves 1 quilo e 300 gramas do que em 1964. Os pneus que Clark usou com êxito absoluto começaram a ser testados logo após a prova de 1964, rodaram 14 mil quilômetros e foram aperfeiçoados pelos técnicos da Firestone, que equipou 21 dos 33 carros concorrentes. Os novos pneus têm 22,5 cm de largura e desenho diferente na banda de rodagem, com ombros simétricos para os carros mais leves, como o de Clark, que tem motor traseiro. Os carros de motor dianteiro foram equipados com pneus de ombros internos quadrados e externos arredondados.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Assim como Clark em corridas passadas, vários excelentes corredores não tiveram sorte desta vez. Foyt é um deles, Dan Gurney, o mais popular corredor norte-americano, é outro. Ambos correram com carros iguais ao de Jimmy. Dan Gurney parou cedo, na 42ª volta, com defeito no motor, quando estava em terceiro lugar. Lloyd Ruby foi outro bom piloto que não conseguiu bom resultado.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Indianápolis foi uma tremenda vitória para Clark. Até então ele não conseguia muita coisa nessa corrida. Em 1963, ele terminou em segundo lugar, 33 segundos depois de Parnelli Jones. Em 1964, estava resolvido a ganhar e liderava a prova quando na 47ª volta o sistema de suspensão de seu carro se partiu e o alijou da competição. Desde o dia seguinte à prova de 1964, estava de olho na de agora. Todo o tempo esteve pensando nela e agora até abandonou provas do Campeonato de Fórmula 1 para se preparar melhor.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A preparação do carro foi perfeita e, ao terminar a prova, Clark disse: "Esta é uma vitória da equipe que trabalhou duramente para consegui-la. Trabalharam muito mais do que se pode imaginar e eu fui só o último elo da corrente". Interrogado sobre se virá em 1966, afirmou: "Até lá ainda há muitas corridas e eu vou pensar muito nisso".
